Ramadhan terakhir kami di UK.. ?

Firstly, I guess it’s not to late to wish every muslim Ramadhan Kareem.. It’s already our fifth day of Ramadhan. Here in UK we started our Ramadhan on Friday the 20th of July, while muslims in Malaysia began fasting a day later (Saturday). Doesn’t matter when we began our Ramadhan, but how we live it that matters. Also, it is our fifth Ramadhan abroad. Alhamdulillah, we’ve been given another opportunity to spend our Ramadhan here by Allah. Initially, we thought of spending our Ramadhan in Malaysia but Allah knows best.

Despite the long hours of fasting this year, the longest fasting day in Ramadhan I’ve ever experienced, but alhamdulillah wa syukrillah, we could bear it. So far, at least. InsyaAllah Allah will ease all our hardship and difficulties that we have. Come to think of it, >18 hours of fasting is not much. I heard those in Norway they fast for ~21 hours. And it is still nothing if we compare those who don’t have food to eat at all. The reason why we are obliged to fast in Ramadhan – to remember the poor people and feel their plight. Insaf..

I remember one conversation with k Rohana (yes, I’ve mentioned this name time and again. Indeed she’s my murabbi) in one of our usrah sessions . Not exactly the same words said, but roughly like this..

“Satu puasa summer ni susah nak buat qiamullail, malam dia pendek sangat..” I said.

.” k Ana replied.

She’s right. Solat isya’ dan terawih apabila bangkit (okay, this is not a good example to follow).  Kalau masih segar, solat isya’ didirikan dulu; kalau larat lanjut ke terawih. Kemudian tidur sekejap (tidur-tidur ayam) sebelum bangkit semula. Sedikit kerugian sebab tak berjemaah di masjid berbanding di Malaysia. Tapi kalau tak silap, kaum wanita sunat beriktikaf di rumah dalam bulan Ramadhan ni (someone please correct me if I’m wrong). I try to make it a routine when I wake up for sahur to perform at least 2 rakaat of sunat prayer. Manfaatkan waktu sahur yang penuh barakah.

A mini tazkirah from our brother Hilal on sahur

Another of my favourite thing about spending the month is lack of distraction, particularly bazar Ramadhan. So, we’ve been having just enough food for ourselves for iftar. Masak special sikit bila banyak masa, contohnya waktu hujung minggu. And the same routine I’ve been doing in Ramadhan. Sometimes I might make kuih, a little extra if we have very simple main meal. Furthermore, since the duration of time when we’re allowed to eat is short, it is quite useless to prepare a lot of food.

Oh, and also we don’t hear anything about Eid until the night of 1st Syawal itself. So, the focus for Ramadhan is almost 100% (if we choose to😉, you know what I mean). There’s lots of Ihya’ Ramadhan activities organized by NMC that I could join. Since last Ramadhan, both my husband & I have daily tadarus & tadabbur session. Well, tadabbur is not as extensive, since I’m the only one with the translated Quran. But still, we try to take the ibrah of what is being told in the Quran. In a way, it kind of mengeratkan kasih sayang kami suami isteri. Insya Allah.. Ya Allah, redhailah kami.

Ramadhan – Month of Revelation

Speaking of tadabbur, I kind of recall a session we had last Ramadhan with a sister, her name is Lubna. She’s a Bangladeshi English. She shared this topic: Ramadhan – Month of Revelation. Sister Lubna pointed out, one of our (muslims) mistakes is our attitude when we read the Quran isn’t the same as when we read other materials. When we read something, we’re meant to understand what we’re reading otherwise we can’t enjoy it. Why don’t we read the Quran the same way when we read our favourite  novel? or at least some news. Which we’ll try to grasp the message that’s being conveyed in that piece of writing.

Ramadan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur’an as a guide to mankind also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (between right and wrong). So everyone of you who is present (at his home) during that month should spent it in fasting, but if anyone is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period (should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you He does not want to put you to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period, and to glorify Him in that He has guided you; and perchance ye shall be grateful.

If we really understand it, there’s a difference between the two, and the impact of our understanding is quite huge. So, it’s up to us to choose.

Well, I guess I ‘talk’ too much this time.

Ramadhan Kareem.. taqaballahu minkum
